2. It's outdoors during the day. Its a urban area.
3. There are a ton of people all crammed into a small area. They are of varying ages.
4. There is a bus station, in pretty good condition. The buses are also in okay shape. They are surrounded by people.
5. The picture is heavy and dark.
6. In this picture, a bunch of people are waiting to get on the bus. It's outside in daytime. The people look unhappy and stressed. The buses are dark and menacing. The whole mood is depressing and oppressive.
7. "Where was this?"
"When was this?"

2. It's outdoors on a cloudy day. It's an urban setting.
3. There are no people in this picture. There is a little bird, however. The first thing that caught my eye was the sign.
4. There's a buisness with a sign on it, and another building. I can't really tell the condition. Nothing surrounds them.
5. It's negative.
6. This picture is in an urban area. There are two buildings, but you can't really see them. A bird is sitting on the wires over one of the buildings. Most of the picture is dominated by a sign. Its not a happy shot.
7. "Why is the mood of this picture so bleak?"
"Why can't we see more of the surrounding buildings?"
Kate P.
1.November 1939.Russell Lee
2. Its outside in the daytime. Its probably an urban area.
3. There aren't any people, it's just the sign. The word GEM caught my eye first.
4. The building and sign are in really good condition. I can't see what surrounds them.
5. It's very light and happy.
6. This picture seemed the least depressing to me. The word exclusive makes it sound like this theater is the best and it is a privalage to attend, not that you have to go there because of your race. Everything is in good shape. It's light out. This picture is very cheerful in the face of all the hardships.
7. "What made you want to take this picture?"
"What is the signifagne of this particular theater?"
1. Esther Bubley, 1943.
2. This picture was taken outdoors during the day. It was a rest stop so it was probably by a road between cities. So it is neither urban or rural.
3. There are no people in this picture. What caught my eye, though, was the sign in between the rest rooms that says the dining room is in the back.
4. The restroom is in good condition, but nothing like what we have today. Around the bathroom is woods, making you know it is not in the city.
5. Even though the building is painted white, I find this picture negative and dark.
6. The fact that the dining room is behind the restrooms says something about the morals of the time this picture was taken. It says that African Americans were second class to 'whites'. The restroom is well kept, but it is only the front, who knows about the back where the 'colored' people ate. The picture was taken out of the city, but it was not rural. It tells you that segregation was not only in populated areas.
7. "Why didn't you take a picture of the dining room?"
"Is the bathroom for 'whites' or 'colored'?"
1. Belle Glade, 1939.
2. This picture was taken outdoors in an Urban area. The shadow of the tree on the diner means it was daytime when this picture was taken.
3. In the picture there is one women of middle age. She is 'white' and is walking out of the diner. The most distinguishing thing about this picture is the sign that says that all are welcome in the words of 'White and Colored Served'. The thing that caught my eyes when I choose this picture was the skyline with the telephone-poles in the background.
4. In the picture is a shabby business. Hills and garbage surround the building. The diner must be on the outskirts of town.
5. This picture is light and cheerful. Even though the business is not how the best of the best were managed, it was not segregated. It adds light to the picture in ways that it takes inference. One example is how the owner understood that money did not exist with only one racial color.
6. My response to this picture was happiness. I had searched high and low for a picture with a sign in it that excepted both 'whites' and 'blacks'. I found this picture, of a diner on the outskirts of a city and took it. The sign makes me wonder why the owner put it up. At the time it was looked down upon if a 'white' was anywhere close to a 'black'. I wonder if the owner gave the same service to both races and if so had many custumers.
7. "Who is the woman leaving the diner, a customer or the owner?"
"Is the diner a popular place to eat at?"
1. Marion Post Wolcott, 1939
2. This picture is in an outdoor area during the day. This Urban area is segragated.
3. In the picture there are two African Americans. They wear nice clothing as they wait for their tickets. The first thing in this picture that catches my eye is the sign "Rex Theatre For Colored People."
4. There are two businesses in the photograph. They are both run down and mismanaged. There is a dark alleyway to the right of the theatre that reminds you of rats and homeless.
5. The photo is heavy. Sure a family is going to see a movie, but they are receiving less than par service for their money because their skin is another color.
6. I was surprised at the condition of this theatre compared to today's world. I do not like that a middle class African American family would not be able to get what they payed for like the people with white skin. The sign is painted in white and says that it is only a theatre for 'colored' people.
7."Why are those two people waiting in front of the theatre?"
"Why did you choose this location for your picture?"
1)Esther Bubley, 1943.
2) This piture is outdoors in an urban city. It is day time and there is lighting from the sun.
3) There are a lot of people in this photo. They are of all ages and are wearing good clothing. I notice that they are all getting on the trains.
4) The structure in this photo is a train station. It is in good condition, and is surrounded by buildings outside it.
5) This picture is negative because of the "white waiting room" sign. This makes the picture dark and negative because it shows seregtion.
6) My response to this photo was that it is wrong because it has a sign that allows segregation. It separates and discriminates on race, which made this a sad picture for me.
7) I would ask, how this picture was taken, and if the people were getting on a bus or a train, because it is hard to tell.
1) John Vachon, 1938
2) This picture is outdoors in an urban area. It is during the day, but there is not much lighting.
3) There is one person in this picture. He is a young boy, wearing normal clothes. I notice that he is drinking from a fountain that has a sign that says colored.
4) There is a building in the picture that looks like some sort of public place. There are things around the picture that you can't see becuase of the dark lighting.
5) This photo is negative because there is a sign that says colored. It makes it dark and depressing because it is segregation.
6) I responded to this picture by feeling bad for this boy. He was forced to drink out of a colored fountain, and was segragated against. It made me think of this as a sad photograph.
7) I would ask where is this, and who is the boy. This would help me understand the photo better.
1) Esther Bubley, 1943
2) The photo is outdoors in an urban area. it is day time, but is very cloudy out.
3) There are no people in this photo.
4) There are two structures in this photo, but you can't tell what they are. All you can see is that one of the scructures has a sign on it that says colored waiting room.
5) This picture is dark and negative because it has a sign that shows segregation. This makes it a sad and negative photo.
6) My response to this photo was that I didn't like it. I didn't like it because it discriminates against African Americans. I also realized that everything was segregated back in this time, which is very wrong. That is why I didn't like this picture, and my response to it wasn't good.
7) I would ask what this structre was, and where it was because it would help me understand what was going on.
1.) Ben Shahn, August 1938. 2.) The picture looks like it is outdoors, in an urban area.It is probably during the day, but there is not a lot of light. 3.) There are no people in the photo. The photo is of a sign in the window of a building. The sign says “We cater the white trade only.”The sign is the first thing I saw when I looked at the picture. 4.) It looks like there is a restaurant or bar in the picture, or some kind of place that sells or buys things. The building is in good condition, and is most likely surrounded by other buildings. 5.) The photo is negative. It is also dark and sad because it is of segregation. 6.) This picture is of a sign saying “We only cater to white trade only.”This is sad because it shows segregation. The photo is dark and depressing. It is not fair that African Americans cannot go to certain places. 7.) “Why won’t they do business with African Americans?” “What is the building that the sign is on?”
1.) Russell Lee, July 1939.
2.) The picture looks like it is inside in an urban area. There is good lighting, so it is probably during the day.
3.) There is a middle-aged African American man, wearing good clothes. The first thing I see in the photo is the man drinking.
4.) It looks like the man is inside a building at some sort of drinking station.Everything seems to be in good condition.
5.) The picture is negative and light. The picture is sad because it shows segregation.
6.) The photo shows a colored drinking fountain. That means that African Americans and white people couldn’t drink at the same fountain. It is sad and confusing.
7.) “Why can’t white people and African Americans drink at the same fountain?” “Are the colored and white fountains in the same condition?”
1.) Marion Post Wolcott, August 1941.
2.) The photo is most likely indoors, at a bar, and the lighting is good.It is probably an urban area and during the day.
3.) There are no people in the photo. The thing that first catches my eye is the sign that says, “Positively no beer sold to Indians.”
4.) The picture is of a bar, in good condition.I can’t see outside the bar, but there are probably more buildings.
5.) The picture is negative and light. It is depressing because it shows discrimination against Native Americans.
6.) The photo is of a bar. There are a bunch of signs up on a wall. One sign says, “Positively no beer sold to Indians.”This is sad because it shows more segregation, but now it is not just with African Americans. It is depressing and confusing.
7.) “Why does segregation and discrimination exist?” “Does the bar sell beer to anyone but white people?”
